16 killed in torrential rains
VARANASI, SEPT. 2. At least 16 were killed and several others
injured in incidents of house collapse and lightning due to
torrential rains in parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh since
yesterday, official sources said here today.
While Varanasi and Azamgarh districts accounted for five deaths
each, three people died in Sonebhadra, two in Jaunpur and one in
Bhadoi district, they said.
Rail and road traffic was affected while several areas in the
district went without power and communication links were snapped,
they said.
Several trains on the Howrah-Lucknow route were diverted, railway
officials said.
