SC notice on Vedic astrology

By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 3. The Supreme Court today issued notice to the Human Resources Development Ministry and the University Grants Commission on a Special Leave Petition filed by a scientist and two others challenging the UGC's move to introduce ``Vedic Astrology'' (Jyotir Vigyan) courses in Indian universities from 2001.

A Bench comprising Mr. Justice Rajendra Babu and Mr. Justice Doraiswamy Raju ordered notice on the SLP, which was directed against the judgment of the Andhra Pradesh High Court declining to entertain a writ petition.

The petitioners, Mr. P.M. Bhargava, scientist, Prof. K. Subash Chandra Reddy and Ms. Chandana Chakrabarti, questioned the UGC's decision in according permission to the universities for starting graduate, post- graduate and research courses in Jyotir Vigyan.
