Govt. will place facts before Cauvery Committee: Patil

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, SEPT. 3. The Water Resources Minister, Mr. H.K.Patil, on Monday said the Government would present the facts before the Cauvery Water Monitoring Committee in New Delhi on Thursday, with the hope that Tamil Nadu would review its demand for release of water from the river.

Mr. Patil, who was participating in a seminar on ``Dams and Development: Evolving frameworks for decision-making'' at the National Law School of India University here, told presspersons that the Chief Secretary would be placing the facts before the committee.

``Our reservoirs are not full. Our position is clear. If there is water, we are ready to release it,'' Mr. Patil said.

He pointed out that the State was depending on divine munificence to fill its reservoirs, and observed that most of the power-generating dams too were not full. In view of the poor storage in the State's reservoirs, he urged the Tamil Nadu Government to reconsider its demand for release of water.

The Central Water Commission team's visit to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka had nothing to do with studying the water levels in the reservoirs in the Cauvery Basin, he said. However, the team members told presspersons that a report on their visit to the dams would be given to the committee on Tuesday.

Mr. Patil said sufficient water had been released from the Alamatti Dam to Andhra Pradesh when a request was made.
