Call for joint effort to check caste evil
By Our Staff Reporter
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 3. The Union Minister of State for
Railways, Mr. O. Rajagopal, has urged like-minded organisations
to join hands for popularising the teachings of Sree Narayana
Guru to further the welfare of the community.
Inaugurating the 147th jayanthi celebrations of Sree Narayana
Guru at the Chempazhanthi Gurukulam here today, he said
the teachings of Sree Narayana Guru had more relevance in the new
millennium when a large number of communal clashes were being
witnessed in the country.
Though Sree Narayana Guru had stressed the need for developing
love as the language of religion, this is not seen in society
these days. Once love and affection towards fellow beings are
seen in a society, the clashes in the name of caste could be
checked, he added.
Though a large number of social evils are still prevailing in
several parts of the country, the social reform movements carried
out in Kerala by Sree Narayana Guru and Sree Chattambi Swami had
helped to wipe out such evils from our society, he said.
These spiritual leaders did not adopt a legal way for removing
such evils but they adopted a spiritual path. This path could be
followed even now for the welfare of society, he added.
Though Sree Narayana Guru had fought against casteism and use of
liquor, these have not been eliminated from society even now.
Most of the people are still in search of reservation in the name
of caste.
According to available statistical records, Kerala is ranked
first in country for the highest per capita consumption of
alcohol, he said. All these social evils can be wiped off if the
teachings of Sree Narayana Guru were upheld, he added.
Though a large number of functions are organised in connection
with Sree Narayana Jayanthi, care should be taken to see that
importance is given to take the ideals of Sree Narayana Guru to
the people and not for organising large-scale celebrations, Mr.
Rajagopal said.
Mr. Rajagopal also assured the authorities of the SN Trust that
he would take all steps to start the International Sree Narayana
Study Centre at Chempazhanthy if a project report was submitted
to him.
The Minister also offered floral tributes at the Vayalvaarathu
Veedu at Chempazhanthi, where Sree Narayana Guru was born.
The Chalai Imam, Pangode R. Abdul Aseez Moulavi, Mr. M. A.
Vahid, MLA, Mr. Kadakampalli Surendran, the convener of the city
SN Trust, Mr. Vellanad P. Surendran, and the head of the
Chempazhanthi Sri Narayana Gurukulam, Swami Amritananda also
spoke.
In the evening, a colourful pageantry was organised from
Sreekaryam Guru Mandiram to the Chempazhanthy Gurukulam. A large
number Sree Narayana devotees clad in yellow dress, inmates of
the Santhigiri Ashram holding muthukudas in the hands, floats
depicting scenes from the life of Sri Narayana Guru, band
troupes, theyyam, Garudan parava and various art forms were also
presented in the pageantry.
Similar functions were also organised by various SNDP Unions in
various parts of the city in connection the jayanthi
celebrations.
