A legal setback
Sir, - Your Editorial `A legal setback' (Sept. 1): The Supreme
Court stay on the appeals of Ms.
Jayalalithaa in the High Court and her appeal thereto for the
vacation of the stay have further complicated the matter
prolonging the period of suspense even as the five-member bench
of the apex court is yet to decide on the judicial validity of
her continuance as the Chief Minister.
As you have stated in your Editorial, Ms. Jayalalithaa continuing
in power beyond the grace period of November 14 is at stake due
to the time factor and the complicity of the multifarious
litigation factors.
Being the supreme head with unquestionable authority of the party
in power, she should have a free hand to deal with the day-to-day
administrative problems, and on this depends the State's peace
and tranquility. She should, in the interests of the State,
nominate her own person to become the Chief Minister as early as
possible and put an end to this period of suspense.

Chennai

Sir - It is rather distressing to note the recent developments on
the issue of the pending cases in the Madras High Court against
Ms. Jayalalithaa. It is very unfortunate, particularly for the
ex-Attorney General of Tamil Nadu to have sworn in an affidavit
before the Supreme Court to transfer the cases to some other High
Court. The Madras High Court has had the privilege of having many
judges and senior advocates who are all luminaries and who have
held the judiciary in high esteem.
K. Jagannathan,
Chennai
