Reminiscences of a naval officer

MY YEARS AT SEA: Vice Admiral S. H. Sarma (Retd.); Lancer Publishers and Distributors, 56, Gautam Nagar, New Delhi-110049. Rs. 450.

THIS BOOK recounts the memoirs of a senior naval officer, who retired in 1978.

The book, written in simple language, tells the reader about Admiral Sarma's induction into the Navy, training and experiences at various appointments, both in India and abroad.

While the book is readable, each chapter contains only incidents relating to personalities, events or landmarks.

The author's description of the 1971 war is very brief and does not contain any new material. Similarly his experience with various ships or shore duties does not bring out any shared opinion, reflection or lesson to be absorbed.

Merely recollecting various events in one's personal life does not add much interest to the common reader or a service professional.

The cost of the book is also high.

Brig. A. THYAGARAJAN (Retd.)
