Erik Barnouw is dead
Prof. Erik Barnouw, a pioneer in media history, Professor
Emeritus at Columbia University, and First Chief of the Motion
Picture and Television Wing of the Library Congress, Washington
DC, died earlier this month in Vermont, U.S. He was 93. Three
decades ago, he fought for the establishment of Public
Broadcasting in America to use television for constructive human
development. He had an abiding interest in India and co-authored
with Dr. S. Krishnaswamy (documentary and television film maker,
Chennai), ``Indian Film'' (Oxford University Press), which is
considered by many an authentic study of Indian cinema and its
social implications. Prof. Barnouw was the author of many books
including the celebrated three-volume History of Broadcasting,
and had won several awards for his books and television work. A
former president of the Writers Guild of America, he was actively
engaged during recent months, with his co-author, in updating
Indian Film for its third edition due for publication soon.
