TDP activist murdered

By Our Staff Reporter

GUNTUR, SEPT. 4. One person belonging to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) was killed when he was attacked by the Congress (I) supporters at Kolagutla of Durgi mandal in Guntur district today.

According to the Superintendent of Police, Mr. J. Purnachandra Rao, the TDP activist, Prathipati Yellamanda (38), went to the open field in the early hours. He was accompanied by Unnava Adinarayana (50). Suddenly, a group of 15 persons attacked them. While Yellamanda, who was admitted to a private hospital in Durgi, was declared dead, Adinarayana was admitted to the Government Hospital in Macherla. The murder was the result of an old factional feud between two groups in the village running into almost three decades. After the advent of the TDP, one group began owing allegiance to it, while the other group remained with the Congress (I). There had been trouble on many occasions between the two groups. However, never had there been a murder due to the factional differences.

The group owing allegiance to the TDP used to dominate the political scene in the village. However, the group belonging to the Congress (I) gained supremacy and won the panchayat elections also. The growing bitterness culminated in the killing of Yellamanda on Wednesday. The police picked up at least five persons suspected to be the accused.

Meanwhile, a police picket was posted at troubled Kunkalagunta village of Nakarikallu mandal in Narasaraopet constituency. The police have arrested 15 persons belonging to the Congress (I) and the TDP.
