Lok Ayukta calls for entrance exam records

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, SEPT. 4. The Lok Ayukta on Tuesday directed the Higher Education Secretary to produce the entire records, including the rank list, relating to the medical- engineering entrance examinations before September 25.

The Lok Ayukta Bench, comprising Mr. Justice P.C. Balakrishna Menon and Mr. Justice V. Bhaskaran Nambiar, issued the directive while admitting a petition seeking to prosecute the Education Minister, Mr. Nalakath Soopy, and Mr. Alphons Kannamthanam, former Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, for allegedly tampering with the medical-engineering rank list.

The Lok Ayukta gave the directive when it held a sitting at Aluva near here today. The petition filed by Mr. Jomon Puthenpurackal of Kottayam sought to `disqualify Mr. Soopy' from continuing as Minister for Education under Section 2(b) of the Kerala Lok Ayukta Act, besides prosecuting Mr. Kannamthanam.

According to the petitioner, ``the first respondent (the Minister) with mala fide intention to delete the name of a student from the rank list and then to insert in that place the name of a student who had not even appeared for the entrance examination colluded with the second respondent (Mr. Alphons Kannamthanam) and committed the manipulation of the entrance examination rank list.''
