Special Cauvery panel meet today
By Gargi Parsai
NEW DELHI, SEPT. 5. The Centre has convened a special meeting of
the Cauvery River Water Authority Monitoring Committee here
tomorrow to discuss the shortfall in the water releases by
Karnataka to Tamil Nadu against the stipulated norm in the
interim award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.
The meeting to be chaired by the Water Resources Secretary, Mr.
B.N. Navalawala, is expected to be attended by the Chief
Secretaries of the basin States - Tamil Nadu, Karnataka,
Pondicherry and Kerala.
As per the figures available with the Ministry, against the fixed
release of 107.64 tmcft (thousand million cubic feet) for June,
July and August by Karnataka, Tamil Nadu received 49.35 tmcft so
far - a shortfall of 58.29 tmcft.
In such a situation, despite the deficient rainfall in Karnataka,
the Monitoring Committee might recommend the release of a few
tmcft of water by Karnataka to tide over the situation in Tamil
Nadu.
