Morepen files third patent

By Our Staff Correspondent

MUMBAI, SEPT. 5. Morepen Laboratories has filed its third international patent on an improved process for the preparation of the amorphous form of Atorvastatin calcium.

With this new improved non-infringing process for the preparation of amorphous Atorvastatin calcium, Morepen would internationally gain entry into the $4 billion global market and would be able to address the substantial export market and launch it under the brand name of Orvastin in the domestic market.

The process developed by Morepen bestows greater yield of highly pure Atorvastatin calcium with very low values of residual solvents and degradation products. The process ensures speed and consistency of production that is vital to improve the commercial viability of manufacturing Atorvastatin calcium.

According to a company release, Atorvastatin enjoys 46 per cent of the sales turnover of Statins in India and has a multi-billion dollar market the world over. The domestic market is of the magnitude of more than Rs. 100 crores annually and is growing at the rate of 71 per cent.

Atorvastatin is the number one among prescribed drugs in the U.S. where it is marketed under the brand name of Lipitor and has the second largest sales turnover there. It is the most widely prescribed cholesterol-lowering agent of the class of Statins.
