Reflection of creativity

Glass is a beautiful medium of expression — colourful and bright. Glass objects such as vases, bowls, and flowers are commonly seen, but stained glass panels are generally confined to larger interiors like churches and halls. Renuka Balasubramani produces small objects like colourful butterflies, clocks, cupboard-fronts, as well as floral panels which enhance the interiors of small flats, large homes and offices.

Lampshades too are a speciality of hers, casting a mellow glow over a dining table or corner of the drawing room. Multi-hued macaws hang on a doorway, while an atrium-like atmosphere is created by sunlight streaming through high panels. Renuka was always attracted by design and began with designing screen printed invitation cards. Chance saw her meet a stained glass artist in Singapore who was her first guide. She returned armed with books and materials and soon created beautiful pieces. She has brightened many homes and offices with her flair and creativity.

She works in a spare room at home using mostly imported glass and joining materials. Given the brittle nature of glass, sourcing the materials is difficult and she often receives consignments that have broken to pieces in transit. However, even these bits, are used intelligently used, costly as they are. Renuka is constantly innovating and always tries to provide her clients with something special.
