Ershad barred from election
DHAKA, SEPT. 6. Bangladesh's former military ruler, Gen. H.M.
Ershad, was formally barred today from taking part in any
election due to his conviction on corruption charges, the
Election Commission said.
A spokesman said the Commission told the retired army chief that
he could not be a candidate in the October 1 general election
because a criminal court in the capital Dhaka had found him
guilty of the charges of corruption.
Gen. Ershad, (71), was sentenced to five years in prison for
amassing millions of dollars of real estate property while in
power from 1982-90 by abusing the office of the presidency.
