Goswami elected AGP president

GUWAHATI, SEPT. 6. Veteran leader Brindaban Goswami, known for his clean image, was today unanimously elected president of the Asom Gana Parishad (Agp) replacing the former Chief Minister, Mr. Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, who was under attack for poll debacle and charges of bigamy.

After a seven-hour meeting of the party's general council held at the Ambari office here, Mr. Goswami's name was proposed by the acting president, Mr. Biraj Kumar Sarma, which was supported by the entire body.

Earlier, the general council meeting accepted the resignation of Mr. Mahanta who cited `personal difficulties' for quitting the post of party president.

Earlier, in a six-page letter to the party's general council meeting, Mr. Mahanta said he was `hurt' by a section of his party's senior leadership accepting the claims of two ``pro- Congress'' local language dailies about his `bigamous marriage.'
