Compromise on Palestine, slavery reached at Durban
DURBAN, SEPT. 8. The World Conference against Racism (WCAR)
adopted a declaration on Saturday recognising the injustice of
slavery and colonialism and the ``plight'' of Palestinians, after
nine days of contentious debate and brinkmanship that repeatedly
threatened to unravel the gathering.
Caste finds no mention
DURBAN, SEPT. 8. The issue of casteism, opposed by India, found
no mention in the final document at the U.N.-sponsored meet on
racism as there was no consensus on it. Indian official sources
said the controversial paragraph clubbing ``work and descent''
was not included .
6 BSF men, schoolgirl killed in J&K blasts
SRINAGAR, SEPT. 8. Militants struck in a big way in Jammu and
Kashmir today, detonating landmines in three separate places, in
which six BSF personnel and a schoolgirl were killed and a dozen
others injured.
Disgruntled Delhi MPs explain stand
NEW DELHI, SEPT. 8. The three disgruntled Delhi BJP MPs - Mr.
Madan Lal Khurana, Mr. Sahib Singh Verma and Prof. Vijay Kumar
Malhotra - met the Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee,
today to express their ``deep sense of anguish'' over reports
that they were responsible for Mr. Jagmohan's ouster from the
Union Ministry of Urban Development in the latest round of
Cabinet reshuffle.
Now, a 'diktat' to non-Muslim women
SRINAGAR SEPT. 8. The campaign aimed at ``Talibanisation'' of
Kashmir took a new turn today, when the militant outfit, Lashkar-
e-Jabbar (LeJ), asked non-Muslim women to adopt a new dress code
so that they are spared from the ``action'' to be initiated
against Muslim women after September 10.
CBI raid on train
JAIPUR, SEPT. 8. CBI sleuths today held a surprise raid on the
luxurious `Palace on Wheels' tourist train near Jodhpur to locate
ticketless travellers. The train was intercepted near Mandore.
New CJ for Madras HC
HYDERABAD, SEPT. 8. Mr. Justice B. Subhashan Reddy of the Andhra
Pradesh High Court has been appointed the Chief Justice of the
Madras High Court. Sources said the President signed the papers
on Saturday and formal orders were expected by Monday.
Geelani's Saudi visit grounded
NEW DELHI, SEPT. 8. The Centre has declined to grant permission
to the All-Party Hurriyat Conference leader, Syed Ali Shah
Geelani, to attend the fourth general Islamic Conference in Saudi
Arabia beginning today, sources in the Hurriyat said.
