Shiny back with a bang

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 8. Former National javelin champion and record holder Shiny Varghese nee Prakash, capped her comeback with a record breaking effort in the 45th State senior athletic meet at the University stadium here on Saturday.

The sultry climate and worn out track had an adverse effect on the competition.

The day's other limelight grabbers were T.M.Sajeev, who set a new meet record in men's 1500m race and Anisha K. Vijayan, who equalled the existing record in women's long jump.

Shiny Prakash touched 43.43m in her third attempt to erase her own mark set of 39.60 set in 1993. The Railway employee, who briefly held the national mark (51.88m set in 1989), is taking part in a major meet after a gap of eight years.

T.M.Sajeev of Thiruvananthapuram effortlessly won the 1500m race in 3:53.40 and in the process broke his own record (3:53.50) set last year. Sajeev hit the front midway through the second lap and maintained his lead till the end.

Anisha K.Vijayan of Kottayam pipped Jetty C.Joseph in her last attempt to win the women's long jump event. Jetty, who is coming back to competition after recovering from an injury, led the field after five rounds when she cleared 5.99 in her fifth. Anisha, whose best was 5.96m in her third attempt, scaled past Jetty with an all-out effort of 6.02m which equalled Jetty's old mark set in 1998. Jetty in her last attempt could manage only 5.96m.

Jipson Jacob and Anju Alex became the fastest men and women athletes respectively. At the end of the first day, Kottayam (87) led the points tally followed by Pathanamthitta (67) and Thiruvananthapuram (58).
