Big project to strengthen roads in State

By Our Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH, SEPT. 8. The Haryana Public Works (Building and Roads) Department has launched a massive development project to strengthen the network of roads in the State. Works involving a record investment of Rs. 432 crores are in progress and more such works costing Rs. 106 crores would be allotted within this month. This was revealed in a meeting presided over by the Chief Minister, Mr. Om Prakash Chautala, to review the working of Public Works (Building and Roads) Department, here yesterday.

Besides, works costing Rs. 121 crores were on to strengthen the National Highways passing through the State, Mr. Prem Prashant, Finance Commissioner and Secretary, PWD, said.

Mr. Chautala expressed concern over the increasing flow of traffic on highways as the State is surrounded by the national capital from three sides and has borders with Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh. He directed the Commissioner to identify those State Highways which were functioning as the national arteries to get them declared as the National Highways by the Central Government. He said he would meet the Union Defence Minister, Mr. Jaswant Singh, in the next few days to urge him that those roads of Haryana, which were being used intensively by the defence forces because of its strategic location, be declared as defence roads.

Mr. Chautala said he had been repeatedly asserting in the meetings of National Capital Region that Haryana should be given adequate assistance to develop its infrastructure, especially in the areas of roads, health, power and water as the State was bearing the burden of the National Capital.
