Publicity to court judgements on women's harassment favoured

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, SEPT. 10. The Director General of Police, Mr H.J.Dora, said that harassment of women employees at workspots can be curbed to some extent if the court judgments delivered on the subject are displayed in offices and through awareness campaigns.

The DGP visualised that gender bias would come down in the next 10 years given the present level of literacy and poverty eradication programmes. By then, girls from poorer sections like SCs, STs and BCs would join the mainstream.

Divergent views were expressed about subsidies being given to the girl child at a seminar organised by the State Women's Commission here on Monday.

Mr R. S. Singh, Secretary for Women Development and Child Welfare, who inaugurated the meeting, said that the girl Child Protection Scheme was unique, as Rs 6,000 was to be deposited in a bank for the child which would grow to Rs 29,500 on her 18th year. The Commission's Chairperson, Mrs Ch. Susheela Devi, said that a change in the mindset of families was required to ensure protection to the girl child.

Mrs Ch. Susheela Devi and Mr Singh lamented that the present national male-female ratio was too low at 933 women for 1000 men, compared to a better position Andhra Pradesh enjoyed (1000:978) and that if this was not improved by encouraging birth of girl children, it might bring in tragic situations such as the ones witnessed in Rajasthan where in certain communities polygamy was practiced. The adverse sex ratio would result in serious socio- economic consequences apart from becoming the cause for law and order problems.
