Sri Krishna jayanthi celebrated in city

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 10. Sri Krishna jayanthi, the birthday of Sri Krishna, was celebrated in the city with gaiety and religious fervour today.

A large number of devotees worshipped at the Krishna temples in the city. The Sri Krishna temples at Malayinkeezhu, Vilwamangalam temple, Peroor Krishna temple, Palkulangara temple and Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple witnessed huge gatherings of devotees. There was also huge crowds to obtain "Paalpayasam" from the Padmanabhaswamy temple.

Sri Krishna jayanthi was celebrated as "Baaladinam" by the Baalagokulam in the State. The week-long cultural programmes, "Krishnaayanam-2001" organised by the Baalagokulam concluded here with a colourful procession, `Sobha yatra', in the city this evening.

Children dressed as Krishna, Radha, Kuchela and Gopikas were present in the procession. Several floats depicting various scenes such as "Kamsavadham", "Geethopadesham", "Radha madhavam" and "Gajendramoksham" also were seen in the pageantry. Various small `sobha yatras' from GPO junction, Press Club road, Vikas Bhavan, Vazhuthacaud, PMG junction, General hospital, Museum, Housing board and Kanakakkunnu palace merged at Palayam. The main `sobha yatra' - "Krishnapravaaham" was flagged off by the former Devaswom Commissioner, Mr. C. P. Nair, in front of the Palayam Ganapathy temple at 4-30 p.m.

The `sobha yatra' led by the organisers of the Baalagokulam, Mr. Meemani Vasudevan, Mr. T. V. Vijayan, Mr. K. Babu and Mr. P. Sreekumar concluded at the Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple.

The traditional `Uriyadi' was held in the city on Sunday.
