Three held in murder case

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 10. The Rural police team has arrested three youth suspected to be responsible for the brutal murder of Shajahan (37) who was hacked to death by a seven-member armed gang in front of his house at Channankara in Kadhinamkulam police station limits on Thiruvonam eve on August 30.

A police team led by the CI (Kazhakuttom), Mr. Sanal Kumar, had arrested the accused from a tribal settlement deep inside Palode forests. The accused were identified as Kabeer alias "ITT" Kabeer, Sudheer (23) and Subair (24). Police said the all the youth had a criminal background and were accused in several other cases including rape and murder.

Mr. Sanal Kumar said that the seven-member gang had carried out the attack on Shajahan at the behest of one Channankara Sulaiman who had a deep enmity with the deceased. The CI said that Sulaiman, who is absconding with his family, had promised the youths a large amount of money and legal aid if they carried out the hit job properly.

The police version of the events is as follows: The gang led by the accused barged into the house of Shajahan. He was chased onto the courtyard and hacked to death in the presence of his wife, mother and children. After committing the gruesome act, the accused covered the dead body with a cloth and stomped on the face to make sure their victim was dead. Officials said there were as many as 33 injuries on Shajahan's body. Several of the cuts and jabs ruptured internal organs and proved to be fatal.

The police team have recovered two swords and chopper from the accused. The SI (Mangalapuram), Mr. K. Pramod Kumar, the SI (Kadhinamkulam), Mr. Shamsudheen and Mr. A. Madhusoodhanan (ASI) were the other members of the police team.
