H & R Johnson launches joint-free porcelain tiles

By Our Corporate Reporter

CHENNAI, SEPT. 10. H & R Johnson (India), a leading manufacturer of ceramic tiles, has introduced joint-free porcelain tiles. Branded as Porselano, these tiles are specially manufactured at its Pen factory near Mumbai.

Addressing presspersons here today, Mr. P.K. Sundaramoorthy, Deputy General Manager (South), H & R Johnson India, said these types of tiles were introduced in India for the first time. Hence the company would clearly have the first mover advantage in this category, he felt. The trend was shifting to porcelain tiles, the worldover, which was preferred over ceramic floor tiles, he added.

This launch had opened a new category in the Indian tile market which was hitherto dominated by mosaic, ceramic and vitrified tiles, the DGM (South) said.

Mr. Sundaramoorthy said the company had registered a 22 per cent growth in turnover to Rs. 340 crores in the year ended March 31, 2001 against the industry average of 8 per cent as a result of a slew of innovative products launched during the year.

The company has a wide array of over 2,000 designs in ceramic tiles and vitrified tiles and a host of topline bathroom products. It has a drawn up a new marketing strategy by opening exclusive display centres. The first one has already come up in Bangalore. It has plans to open three more centres - one each in Calicut, Ernakulam and Chennai - soon.

Besides the Pen factory, the company has manufacturing facilities in Kunigal (near Bangalore), Dewas (Indore) and Karaikal (Pondicherry).
