B.S. Reddy, new CJ for Madras HC

By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 11. The President has appointed Mr. Justice Bollampally Subhashan Reddy, judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, to be the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.

His appointment assumes significance in the context of the Supreme Court while passing orders on a petition making it clear that the new Chief Justice alone should nominate the judge to commence fresh hearing of all the 18 appeals filed by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms. Jayalalithaa, and others in the `TANSI land deal' and `Pleasant Stay hotel' cases from October 1.

In view of the apex court's direction, the immediate priority of the new Chief Justice would be to name the judge within a week of his assuming office.
