NIMS gets new equipment for cancer treatment
By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD, SEPT. 11. The Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences
(NIMS) has acquired a CT simulation and three-dimensional
treatment planning system for its Department of Radiation
Oncology.
Purchased at a cost of Rs. 80 lakhs, this state-of-art system
will facilitate better localisation of a tumour, accurate
treatment planning and verification and, finally, a better cure
rate of tumour. The Health Minister, Dr. S. Aruna, will
inaugurate these machines on September 12.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, the NIMS Director,
Prof. Kakarla Subba Rao, and the Head of Department of Radiation
Oncology, Dr. Ratnam V. Sunkavalli, said the new CT would provide
a 3-D picture. It would vastly help plan the treatment of
tumours.
They said the aim of radiotherapy in the treatment of cancer was
to deliver a precisely measured dose of radiation to a defined
tumour volume with minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
CT simulation would allow accurate definition of tumour volume
and three-D treatment planning to optimise dose distribution.
Dr. Subba Rao said the NIMS would conduct scanning for white card
holders free of cost and charge an amount of Rs. 1500 from
others, while the treatment would cost Rs. 220 a day. The eight-
year-old oncology wing of the NIMS has about 100 beds and over
100 patients turn up daily for check-up.
PG programme
Meanwhile, the NIMS announced its post-graduate programme for the
year 2002. The notification for MD/MS/DMRD/DM/Mch in various
specialities will be issued on September 15.
The last date for sale and submission of applications is October
10 and the date for entrance examination at Osmania Medical
College is November 11. Counselling will be held at the NIMS on
November 28, while the courses will commence on January 1, 2002.
Further details can be had from the Academic Section on telephone
