HCL, Dell launch Pentium 4 desktops

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 11. Two PC manufacturing companies - HCL Insys and Dell Computers - today announced the launch of Pentium 4 powered desktops. HCL Infosystems said it would market one variant of Pentium 4 PC with a sub-Rs. 40,000 price range. Dell Computers merely assured that it would price its new systems ``comparably'' to their Pentium III predecessors. The new desktops have been introduced simultaneously with the launch of Intel's Pentium 4 processor based on the Intel 845 chipset globally today.

Dell said for the end user, the incorporation of Pentium 4 would translate to smoother multi-tasking, improved multimedia performance and headroom for future software needs. HCL officials said their higher-end PC would further enhance productivity across sections of the industry such as banking and insurance.

HCL will target its `Infiniti Plus' range of commercial desktops at the corporate segment while the `Beanstalk Omega' range of PCs will target the home and SOHO segment. ``The new price range would add fillip to our efforts to take IT to the masses in India,'' said HCL Insys' Mr. Rajendra Kumar, in a statement.

Dell also has launched two variables, `Optiflex GX240' and `Dimension 4300' for corporate customers and SOHO users, respectively. Dell official pointed out that Pentium 4 entering mainstream desktops is an important milestone. ``Pentium 4 has been available for some time but only on high end systems. We have been anxious to help our corporate and individual customers migrate to this important technology, and our business model lets us do that quickly, easily and affordability,'' noted Mr. Amit Midha of Dell's Asia Pacific division.
