Bush vows to avenge 'acts of war'
Washington, Sept. 12. The U.S. President, Mr. George W. Bush,
condemned terrorist attacks in New York and Washington as ``acts
of war'' on Wednesday and said he would ask Congress for money to
help in the recovery and to protect the nation's security. The
Secretary of State, Gen. Colin Powell, said the attacks were an
act of war and promised the U.S. would respond "as if it is a
war."
FBI team raids Boston hotel
Boston, Sept. 12. As Logan International Airport officials
defended their security system, investigators on Wednesday began
tracing the hijackers who boarded two airliners at the airport
and crashed them into New York's World Trade Center.
Doubts over PM's visit
New Delhi, Sept. 12. With the United States grappling with the
fallout of the terrorist strikes on its two major cities, the
upcoming U.N. General Assembly session in New York may be
rescheduled.

decision of the Allahabad High Court - though for reasons
somewhat different from those assigned by the High Court -
``dismissing two election petitions at the preliminary stage''
challenging the election of the Congress president, Ms. Sonia
Gandhi, to the Lok Sabha in October 1999, from the Amethi
parliamentary constituency.
Osama denies hand
Islamabad, Sept. 12. The Saudi fugitive, Osama bin Laden,
described as `America's number one enemy', has denied any
involvement in the attacks on the World Trade Center and the
Pentagon but maintained that he fully supported such `daring
attacks'.
RSS, church leaders meet
Nagpur, Sept. 12. In a bid to patch up differences over
controversial issues, leaders of the RSS and the National Council
of Churches in India (NCCI) today met for the first time and
described their meeting as ``satisfactory and a good beginning.''
Stocks, rupee under pressure
New Delhi, Sept. 12. Driven by a panic reaction, financial
markets in India, including stocks and foreign exchange, touched
a new low but tended to weather the pressure with the support of
regulators and large banks.
Gold prices shoot up
Mumbai, Sept. 12. Gold prices today spiralled in the global
markets following terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and
the Pentagon in the U.S. The yellow metal opened in the local
market sharply higher by Rs. 160 per 10 gm. at Rs. 4,620 as
against yesterday's close of Rs. 4,460.
Bus fare hiked by 25 p.c.
Thiruvananthapuram, Sept. 12. Bus fare will go up by 25 per cent
in Kerala from October 1. The Chief Minister, Mr. A.K. Antony,
said here today that the fare had to be increased as the Kerala
State Road Transport Corporation could not continue its
operations without improvement in its revenues. The hike would be
applicable to services operated by private agencies also. The
vehicle tax on private stage carriers would be increased by 50
per cent.
9 killed in landmine blast
Patna, Sept. 12. Nine persons, including six policemen, were
killed and three others injured in a landmine blast and
subsequent encounter in Bihar's naxal-hit Kaimur district today.
