Four Wipro staff in New York 'missing'

BANGALORE, SEPT. 12. Computer software giant, Wipro Ltd. has said that 50 of its personnel were working in New York at the time of the attack on the World Trade Center on Tuesday.

As news about the devastation broke out, the Wipro office in Santa Clara launched a crisis centre to contact its employees who were known to be in the New York area.

A company spokesperson said here that the company officials were able to contact 46 employees who were said to be safe but were still awaiting information about the remaining four. The latest information would be posted on the Wipro website www.wipro.com.

The personnel were working in the World Trade Center office of a client company, Morgan Stanley. The Wipro Chairman, Mr. Azim Premji, was also in New York visiting another client on Tuesday but left early that morning for New Jersey.

Another IT major, Infosys said its 200 employees in the New York area were safe. The COO and managing director, Mr. Nandan Nilekani, said, ``We are in touch with them and their families and we are encouraging our people there to donate blood.''

MindTree Consulting, Bangalore, said three of its employees, who were in the collapsed building, were reported to be safe.

The Cisco CEO, Mr. John Chambers, has sent an e-mail to employees worldwide saying that the company was doing everything possible to find out the status of its employees in the affected areas.
