Commissioner serves notices on councillors
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, SEPT. 12. The Chennai Corporation Commissioner, Mr. J.T.
Acharyulu, has served notices on councillors and the Mayor asking
for explanation as to why they did not file returns of property
held by them as per legal provisions.
Rule 2 of The Members of The Madras City Municipal Corporation
(Disclosure of Assets) Rules, 1973, requires all elected members
of the council, including the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor, to file
periodical disclosure of their assets soon after their election
and every 12 months thereafter.
The letter from the Commissioner, dated September 8, states that
the members had not furnished the returns in compliance with the
Rules. Following a circular on March 27 last year, the members
had filed their property return without indicating the period to
which the said returns relate.
Within seven days of the receipt of the letter, the members
should show-cause as to why action should not be taken against
them under Section 364 A of the MCMC Act, 1919. Failing which
further action would be taken, the letter adds.
Section 364 A says that a person who omits to furnish returns, or
knowingly or negligently furnishes false information should, ``on
conviction, be punished with fine not exceeding one hundred
rupees.''
