Plan to use bio-mass for power generation

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, SEPT. 12. A workshop to explore the possibilities of using non-conventional energy in Pondicherry will be held shortly, according to Ms. Satbir Silas, Chairperson and Project Director of the District Rural Development Agency.

She was participating at a function to mark the inauguration of the nation's first island to be electrified through a 5-kv capacity wind- cum-solar energy plant at Chunnambar tourism resort three km off Ariankuppam, near here on Tuesday.

Ms. Silas said the workshop would be held in co-ordination with the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA).

The Union Minister of State for Non-conventional Energy sources, Mr. M. Kannappan, said a plan to use bio-mass in Pondicherry for power generation was under the active consideration of the Ministry. He had, in fact, held a discussion with the Union Territory officials on the quantum of garbages and the nature of municipal wastes available in the town. The Ministry would immediately extend all assistance for power generation through bio-mass, he said. He also said that apart from bringing light and fan facilities to the island, the non-conventional energy would also help augment the revenue at this tourist spot.

Mr. T. Jayamoorthy, MLA, Ariankuppam, regretted that the local leaders and prominent citizens in Ariankuppam constituency were not invited for the function. An official immediately assured him that the error would ``not recur in future''.
