12,800 families to benefit from Antyodaya scheme

PONDICHERRY, SEPT. 12. The Local Administration and Civil Supplies Minister of Pondicherry, Mr. C. Jayakumar, told the Assembly on Tuesday that as per the target of the Central Government, a total of 12,800 families were to be selected in the Union Territory to get the benefit of Antyodaya Anna Yojana scheme. Village level committees comprising village administrative officers, grama sevakas and commune panchayat staff had also been set up to identify the eligible families.

He was replying to a call attention motion given notice of by the DMK member, Mr. S. P. Sivakumar.

Mr. Jayakumar said about 8500 families had been identified as the poorest of the poor who would be provided rice at Rs. 3 per kilo. He said that to eradicate starvation of the poorest of the poor, the Centre launched the ``Antyodaya Anna Yojana'' which was inaugurated by Union Minister of State, Mr. Sriram Chauhan in Pondicherry last month.

Mr. Jayakumar said that as soon as allocation of rice was received from the Centre, the beneficiaries would be supplied. Due care had been taken that no eligible family was deprived of the benefit under the below poverty line category.

Starvation deaths had not been reported from any quarter in Pondicherry. This factual situation had also been filed as an affidavit in the Supreme Court, he said.
