Alex, Priya corner honours

By Our Sports Reporter

BANGALORE, SEPT. 12. S. Alex and K.N. Priya led the Tamil Nadu charge on the opening day of the 13th South Zone junior athletic championship, being organised jointly by Globe Trotters Athletic Union and David's Athletic Movement, at the Sree Kanteerava stadium here today. TN finished the day with a haul of 18 golds against Karnataka's 13 and fancied Kerala's 12, on a day when 51 finals were gone through.

Alex, the youngest brother of Selvaraj Robert, the former 100m national champion, breezed through to the finish in an encouraging time of 10.6 seconds to emerge the fastest athlete of the meet. The sturdy 20-year-old Alex is a second year B.Com student at Trichy's St. Joseph College.

K.N. Priya's dream of a clean sweep in the under-20 girls section got a jolt with Andhra Pradesh girl A. Kalyani winning the 100m hurdles gold in 14.1 seconds and pipping Priya to the silver with a 14.5 seconds effort. But Priya, the second year SIET student had no peers winning the 100m dash clocking 11.8 seconds.

Karnataka too had its share of glory. Bindu Rani skipped her pet 400 metres with a muscle pain but clinched the girls under-18 100m gold in 12.0 seconds.

Shilpa R. Rao ran a splendid 350 metres and then staved off a late surge from TN's T. Bindu to breast the tape in the 400m for girls under-16 in 59.5 seconds her personal best.

The meet on a day of crowded programme, went about without much abberations, although the boys under-18 100 metres heats was put off considerably to accommodate the inauguration ceremony. The organisers however could not provide the previous records, as it was not made available.
