Harikrishna, Humpy conferred titles
CHENNAI, SEPT. 12. Andhra chess prodigies Pentyala Harikrishna
and Koneru Humpy were conferred Grandmaster and Woman Grandmaster
titles by FIDE at the recently held FIDE Congress at Greece.
Giving this information today, Mr. P.T. Ummer Koya, Secretary of
the AICF and Vice President of FIDE said ``they were awarded by
the qualification commission without any delay at the earliest
possible time.''
He said, the IWM title of Meenakshi Subbaraman of Indian
Airlines, Chennai, IM titles of Sundararajan Kidambi of Chennai
and Sriram Jha were also passed in the meeting which he attended
in the last few days.
Mr. Koya also noted that 14-year-old Guntur girl Humpy would be
given a men's IM norm for winning the World Junior. Since she has
norms covering the required games from the Oakham Junior in
England, Lipi International in Hungary and now the World Junior
in Greece she qualifies to become the second Indian lady to
become a men International Master after Vijayalakshmi.
