Inspiring images
JAYA KALRA says she is moved by the human spirit. When the images
of the carnage in America flashed on television screens in the
city, it was a moment for contemplation for her.
For Kalra, these images will inspire a hundred more, and they
will all be frozen in time on a canvas.
``I am thinking about what happened,'' she says. Jaya Kalra is an
artist from Shillong (Meghalaya) and an exhibition of her
paintings is on at the Lalit Kala Akademi on Greams Road.
The 30 paintings now on show as ``Expression'' dwell heavily on
women, particularly tribals. There is also a heavy spiritual
stamp in her work, she says, flowing out of the belief that the
journey for inner peace begins within.
One of the portraits is that of a Santhali tribal woman, with two
pots. Another depicts a woman with a bird as a companion - the
bird is free, but the woman is in reality caged.
Jaya says she has been doing solo exhibitions since 1992, and she
participated in her very first group expo in 1980.
Her oil and water colour paintings will be on show at the Akademi
upto September 15, from 10 to 7.
