Mundane realities
While scanning the newspaper recently, I spotted an advertisement
that Krishnaswamy Associates' new serial, ``Oorarindha Rahasyam
2001'', based on thought-provoking and humorous short stories is
being telecast on Podhigai TV at 7.30 p.m. on Mondays. But why
`rahasyam' in the title remains a mystery to me even after
watching a few episodes. One of the episodes, ``Entha
porkalathil'' was well-conceived and had a message to convey. But
to hold the viewers' attention, the message needs to be blended
with the story, so that the characters don't end up sermonising
and the entertainment remains intact.
The sets, music and acting were quite satisfactory. Yet, one
felt that the expressions of the actor who played the son did not
quite show the restlessness of modern youth.
The story opens with a mother telling her daughter to thank her
aunt before accepting a gift.
The mother strongly feels that discipline without love is inhuman
and love without discipline is dangerous. The aunt then tells
about her disobedient son, who spends most of his time with
friends and returns home late in the night. Next day, the aunt
and her husband find a revolver in their son's possession. Both
are panic-stricken and an altercation between father and son
follows.
The father says that social ills can be weeded out only when
every individual takes the right path. Though their views are
quite similar, it's the generation gap that fails to bridge the
distance.
The serial's time slot is comfortable. But stories need to be
tackled more sensitively to make them interesting.
