Kamal Nath to heed MLAs request
By Our Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI, SEPT. 12. The AICC(I) general secretary in charge of
Delhi, Mr. Kamal Nath, declared today that all those blocks and
districts where objections have been raised by MLAs about
injustice done to them in nominating representatives would be re-
constituted. He also declared that disputes pertaining to two
presidents in one block would be settled in accordance with the
wishes of the legislator concerned.
Mr. Kamal Nath said he had asked the Delhi Pradesh Congress(I)
Committee president, Mr.Subhash Chopra, to submit a list of such
disputed block presidents. The area MLAs have also been asked to
send in the name of the person which they would like to nominate.
``This matter was raised by a number of MLAs who have alleged
that people who are not active Congressmen have been nominated.
This will not be allowed to take place and even if I have to
change the list, I will not hesitate,'' he asserted.
This assertion will certainly not come as music to the ears of
Mr. Chopra or disgruntled party leaders who had managed to impose
opponents of the loyalist MLAs as block presidents during the
organisational polls last year creating problems in their
functioning. A number of loyalist MLAs had also raised the issue
at meeting of the MLAs on September 5 and sought justice from Mr.
Nath. ``The local MLA should have a block president of his
choice. I will scrap the previous list if it is found to be
faulty. I will also sort out the row over the appointment of some
district presidents. This will be done before the final PCC list
is released,'' he assured.
Stating that the delay in formulating the PCC(I) was not at his
end, Mr. Nath said he was still awaiting the list of possible
candidates from the DPCC(I) president, who has promised to submit
the same during the new two or three days. ``I am not here to
promote the interests of any individual or group. I have to first
watch the interests of the party. If something wrong is done by
the PCC(I) president, I will always correct it and that also goes
for the government,'' he added.
Dispelling the impression that he did not meet party MLAs and
workers from Delhi, Mr. Nath said he was flooded with petitions
and visitors, of which nearly 80 per cent were from Delhi.
``Throughout the day, MLAs keep meeting me to redress their
grievances. In addition, I get inputs from the party president,
Ms. Sonia Gandhi, on the performance of the party and the
government in Delhi and on what steps should be taken to redeem
the situation.''
Flooded with complaints about Ministers, Mr. Kamal Nath said he
would meet them individually and seek a status report. This would
be done in consultation with the Chief Minister, Ms. Sheila
Dikshit, as we cannot afford to be complacent with the MCD
elections due in the next few months. The party now has to gear
up its machinery and highlight the Government's achievements so
that people are made aware not only about the developmental steps
taken by the Congress(I) Government but also expose the
corruption of the BJP in the Corporation and throughout the
country.
