House condemns terrorist attack on U.S.

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, SEPT. 13. The Pondicherry Territorial Assembly today mourned those killed in the terrorist attack on the U.S. on September 11 and expressed its concern.

As soon as the House assembled, the Speaker, Mr. M.D.R. Ramachandhran, made an obituary reference to those killed in the atrocities committed by terrorists at the World Trade Centre and Pentagon. The Speaker said the act deserved to be condemned in the strongest terms as it was opposed to humanity. It was feared that among those killed were Indians and particularly Tamils.

The House also expressed its grief to the families that lost their kith and kin.

After the Speaker read out the obituary reference, the members stood in silence for a few minutes in memory of those killed.

Information centre helpful

The Chief Minister, Mr. P. Shanmugham, today told the Territorial Assembly that the information centre opened by the Administration at the National Informatics Centre and the Department of Information to procure details of safety of relatives of people of Pondicherry in the U.S. had been of help. Information of safety of 13 persons had already been obtained and passed on to the people here.

The Chief Minister said that as no immediate contact in respect of one person could be established e-mail message had been sent to the person in the U.S. The information cell was operating round the clock since September 12, he added.
