Artists' view of animals
ANIMALS OF the Earth, an exhibition of sculptures and paintings
by seven artists at the Apparao Galleries (Wallace Garden III
St.) features very stylised interpretations of different animals
in a variety of mediums.
Maximum number of entries are from P. G. Dinesh, whose favourite
subject is the cat. If the black ink drawings show a single cat
in different poses, the multicoloured ink compositions contain
other animals around the cat.
With various kinds of shapes filling the animal bodies, these are
rather decorative. But Dinesh steals the viewer's heart with his
small metal versions of the cat, even though they too have other
designs etched on them.
Two ceramic seated bulls are the creations by Jai Zarotia. One of
them with a human head looks up as though questioning the viewer.
The rather flat elongated bronze form of an elephant with its
baby in toe by Nupur Chatterjee is charming. The taut form of a
porcupine is from the hands of Devilal Patidar.
The bronzes from Rajasekaran Nair are in delightfully simple
lines. The top of the animals are made to look like a table top.
He has come out with very compelling forms of a rooster, rat, pig
and cat.
The wood sculptures by Laxma Goud, which are also painted and
lacquered, are rather erotically conceived. He has also shown a
black ink wash drawing. Muralidharan has contributed a
watercolour painting of a pink elephant! Although artists from
various parts of the country have come up with works which look
at animals as aesthetic subjects, the exhibition, on till
September 20, seems rather casually put together. The timings are
Tuesday - Saturday 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. Monday 2-7 p.m.
