Lambardini buys Greaves engine plant

CHENNAI, SEPT. 14. Lombardini India Pvt. Ltd, a 100 per cent
subsidiary of Lombardini s.r.l, Italy, has acquired the 422 cc
engine project of Greaves at Aurangabad
These engines manufactured under licence from Piaggio, mark the
beginning of a series of diesel engines to be launched by the
Italian major in India.
The assets acquired are located in a 10,500 sq. m new plant in
the industrial area of Aurangabad in Maharashtra. The engines to
be produced in this plant will include a family of 422cc diesel
and gasoline engines with integral transmission. These engines
will be sold to the Piaggio plant at Baramati for its Ape three-
wheeler and also to other customers in course of time, says a
release.
The first commercial batch of engines is expected to roll out by
the end of 2002. Lombardini target is to reach an annual
production of 50,000 engines in the third year of commercial
operation, the long-term objective being to set up a significant
base in India to produce other products.
