Good start by Zimbabwe
BULAWAYO, SEPT. 14. Zimbabwe was 154 for two wickets at the close
on the first day after bad light stopped play in the second and
final Test against South Africa at Queen's sports club on Friday.
Zimbabwe's opening batsmen Alistair Campbell and Dion Ebrahim
gave their side a slow but solid start in their bid to level
their Test series.
At tea, Zimbabwe was 126 for no wicket, a record opening
partnership for the host against South Africa bettering the
previous mark of 13, with Campbell on 67 and Ebrahim at 55.
The pair scored only 52 runs in 37 overs between lunch and tea
but their performance set up the possibility of a big Zimbabwe
total on a pitch expected to help the spin bowlers.
South Africa leads the series 1-0 after winning the first Test in
Harare by nine wickets on Tuesday. Campbell and Ebrahim were
seldom troubled by the South African bowlers on a placid pitch
after Zimbabwe captain Heath Streak won the toss and decided to
bat.
Campbell played some fine off-side strokes as he advanced to his
50 off 123 balls, while Ebrahim was subdued after playing some
aggressive square cuts early on against the new ball.
