Chhatisgarh steps to check migration
By Our Staff Correspondent
RAIPUR, SEPT. 15. The Chhatisgarh Government has drafted a
comprehensive action plan to check migration by providing
employment to people at the end of the farming season.
Announcing this at the one-day Collectors' conference here, the
Chief Minister, Mr. Ajit Jogi, said besides adopting the ``Food
for Work'' scheme, the Government will take up developmental
works on a massive scale to provide employment to the labourers.
As per the new action plan, the Government intends to repair
34,000 km of rural roads which can generate employment for
thousands of labourers. Directing the Collectors to ensure the
implementation of the scheme, Mr. Jogi said last year
developmental works worth Rs.500-550 crores were carried out.
This year an additional Rs.300-350 crores will be sanctioned for
the purpose, he added.
Lakhs of farming labourers migrate to neighbouring States in
search of jobs in October after the farming season ends. The
situation was particularly serious in the past two years due to
severe drought. However, if these farmers are given employment
here, they can be stopped from going to other places.
