Pak. banks freeze Taliban officials' accounts

ISLAMABAD, SEPT. 16. In the first step of cooperation with the United States in the war against terrorism and Saudi renegade Osama bin Laden, Pakistan has frozen bank accounts of around 300 Afghan nationals including officials of the Taliban administration as well as present and former ministers and commanders.

Local daily `The News' reported today from Peshawar, which borders Afghanistan that the accounts were frozen following a circular issued by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) yesterday to the banks to hold up the accounts of some 300 important Afghan nationals.

Quoting top banking sources, it said most of the names in the list provided by the SBP were the leaders of Taliban administration.

The decision, it said, appeared to have been taken in the backdrop of US charter of demands presented to the Pakistani Government following Tuesday's bomb attacks in Washington and New York.
