Demand funds, don't beg, Ibrahim urges CM

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, SEPT. 16. The former Union Minister, Mr. C.M.Ibrahim, today hoped that the Janata Dal (S) and the Janata Dal (United) would come together at a suitable time and efforts were on to achieve this.

He was inaugurating the Janata Dal (S) workers' meeting of the Rajajinagar Assembly constituency. He said the split in the Janata Dal was the sole reason for its defeat in the Assembly elections. ``We all have to wait till that auspicious moment of the merger,'' he said.

Mr. Ibrahim, while criticising both the Congress and the NDA governments, advised the Chief Minister, Mr. S.M.Krishna, to demand the State's share of funds from the Centre, instead of begging for it to take up drought relief works. Several pro-poor programmes were implemented by the H.D.Deve Gowda government throughout the country, but not a single such work had been taken up either by the Centre or by the State Government.

While the NDA government was closing down all public sector undertakings, the Congress government in the State was following in the Centre's footsteps and was under the illusion of converting Bangalore into Singapore at the cost of the poor and the unemployed.

Mr. H.C.Mahadevappa, former minister, said it was during the Janata Dal rule in the State that a Rs. 30-crore programme to provide hospitals, schools, drinking water and houses were provided for slum dwellers in Bangalore. No new programme had been taken up by the Congress government. Mr. N.M.Nabi, former minister, supported his views. He criticised Mr. Ananth Kumar for frequently lashing out at non-BJP parties.

Prof. A.Lakshmisagar, former minister and MP, said the elections to the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike were fast approaching and exhorted the Janata Dal(S) workers to gear for the task.

Mr. J.Huchappa, former Mayor, welcomed the gathering. Mr. Ratan Singh, President of the JD(S) Bangalore City unit, was present.
