Zimbabwe posts big total
BULAWAYO (ZIMBABWE), SEPT. 16. Zimbabwe declared its innings at
419 for nine in the first innings on the third day of the second
and final Test here on Sunday. In reply, South Africa had made 26
for no loss in its first essay at close of play. Herschelle Gibbs
with 15 and Gary Kirsten with 11 were batting.
Once again, the star for the home team was left-handed batsman
Andy Flower, who made 67.
Flower, who scored 142 and 199 not out in the first Test in
Harare, gave the Zimbabwe innings impetus after the second day
was rained off yesterday. He batted aggressively to make his runs
off 99 balls before being caught at silly point off left-arm
spinner Claude Henderson soon after lunch.
With the second day's play having been rained off, Zimbabwe
needed to score reasonably quickly to have a chance of forcing a
win to level the two-match series on a slow pitch giving help to
the slow bowlers.
While Stuart Carlisle (49) played an anchor role, Grant Flower
took over as the aggressor after his elder brother was out. Grant
Flower made 44 off 84 balls with a six and six fours before being
run out when he slipped in mid-pitch after being sent back by
Stuart Carlisle. Carlisle's long innings ended when he pushed
forward against South African captain Shaun Pollock and was
struck on the back pad and given out lbw. He had batted for 265
minutes and faced 201 balls.
