Police to invoke NSA against miscreants

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, SEPT. 17. The police will not hesitate to invoke the National Security Act for detaining those responsible for the burning of a bus at Gandhipuram here and planting of country bombs on the rail track near Mettuppalayam last week.

Talking to reporters here today, the City Police Commissioner and Range DIG incharge, Mr. Narinder Pal Singh, and the SP, Coimbatore Rural, Mr. K. Sokkalingam, said certain elements were trying to indulge in mischief in a bid to ``build their image'' and that of their organisation.

Mr. A. Shanmugarajan, founder-leader of the Makkal Marumazharchi Kazhagam (MMK) was arrested in Chennai when he attempted to stage a demonstration on September 12 demanding opening of toddy shops and inclusion of a Community in the Most Backward Classes list.

Demanding his release, miscreants set ablaze a TNSTC bus here on September 13 and planted country bombs on the rail track the next morning.

The Commissioner said the MMK leader had ``arranged'' henchmen to carry out his instructions. Two groups were sent on special assignments.

After the arrest of Shanmugarajan for questioning, the police would not hesitate to invoke the provisions of the NSA.

The Commissioner and the SP appreciated the special teams led by the Assistant Commissioner (Law and Order/East), Mr. Nizamuddin and the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mettuppalayam, Mr. Thangaraj, for arresting four persons in connection with the Mettuppalayam incident and for nabbing one person for the Gandhipuram bus burning, within 48 hours of the crime.

The teams nabbed them before they attempted to execute other plans. Two country bombs and four banners were seized from them.

The police were on the lookout for one Palanisamy in connection with the Mettuppalayam incident and for Ayyappan, Isakki and Muthu for the Gandhipuram arson.

Cases were registered under the Indian Penal Code, the Explosive Substances Act, the Indian Railways Act and the Tamil Nadu Public Properties Prevention of Damage Act.
