Rightsizing needed
Sir, - It is indeed a surprise that the Governments in the U.K.,
Spain, Greece, France, Italy, Egypt and Ireland, have spent over
30 per cent of their GDP on subsidies. India has spent only 15
per cent and China 8.1 per cent.
It is a pity that many State Governments are unable to pay
salaries on time. The Government should spend more on primary
education, health care and maintenance of law and order. It
should not involve itself in activities which the private sector
can handle efficiently. Rightsizing expenditure, and not
downsizing the Government, is what the country needs.
R. N. Lakhotia,
