Totally unwarranted
Sir, - Ms. Gail Omvedt's reference to Infosys is totally
unwarranted. Infosys may be the best known face of the Indian
software industry but it is not synonymous with the industry and
its practices. The article does not carry any reference to any
particular feature or practice of Infosys.
Also the example of Pune University is more of an isolated case
rather than a representation of reality. It is a well-known fact
that there is reservation for SCs and STs in all the
universities, including the IITs. The whole issue should be
looked at in a broader context. The fact is that the SCs and the
STs have been marginalised in all the fields and computers are no
exception. So the solution should be searched in a wider context.
The students who come in through reservation are generally
weaker. But no institution help thems to strengthen their basics.
