Pallavi wins title

MANGALORE, SEPT. 17. Local lass Pallavi Maiya prevented a clean sweep by Bangalore players at the State under-12 and under-14 rapid chess championships for boys and girls organised by Derik's Chess School, Mangalore, under the auspices of Karnataka Chess Association. The tournament concluded here on Sunday. Top two placed players from each category will participate in the National U-12/U-14 championships to be held at Chandigarh.

Pallavi topped the under-12 girls category finishing with 6.5 points warding off local challenge from Irol M. Pinto (5.5). Reigning national under-14 champion Sunil R from Bangalore had an easy run scoring 6 points in 7 rounds to top the under-14 boys category. J. Megha from Bangalore topped the girls under-14 category while Prachura P.P (Commonwealth championship runner-up) also from Bangalore won the boys under-12 category.

Under-14 boys: 1. Sunil R. (BNG) 6, 2. Sriram Sarja (Shimoga) 5.5, 3. Vishnu Ramanath (BNG) 5. Under-14 girls: 1. Megha (BNG) 5, 2. Namitha (Mysore) 4, 3. Impana (Mysore) 2.5. Under-12 boys: 1. Prachura P.P. (BNG) 7, 2. M.Suraj (BNG) 7, 3. Nitesh Bhat (Mangalore) 6.5. Under-12 girls: 1. Pallavi Maiya (Mangalore) 6.5, 2. Irol M. Pinto (Mangalore) 5.5 and Smitha Jugthap (Belgaum) 5.5.
