ICC anti-corruption unit in South Africa
LONDON, SEPT. 17. The anti-corruption unit (ACU) of the
International Cricket Council (ICC) is on a visit to South Africa
for a series of meetings linked to security planning for the
World Cup in 2003.
Lord Condon, director of the unit, accompanied by senior
investigator Jeff Rees and support manager Bob Smalley, arrived
in South Africa on Sunday and would be there till September 20,
an ICC release said.
With a focus on World Cup security and the prevention of
corruption, Lord Condon and his team will hold meetings in
Johannesburg with Dr. Ali Bacher, director of the World Cup 2003
tournament, Gerald Majola, chief executive of the United Cricket
Board of South Africa and Patrick Ronan, Randall Howard,
Mzwandile Simon, director Ben van Deventer and Rory Steyn of the
security directorate for Cricket World Cup 2003.
``The World Cup in 2003 has always been a significant target date
in our drive to eradicate corruption from the international
game,'' Lord Condon said.
``I am on record as saying that corruption will be at an
irreducible minimum by the World Cup in South Africa, and I stand
by that commitment.
The main purpose of this visit is to cement already established
relationships with the World Cup security directorate, and to put
into action joint security and anti-corruption plans.`` From
Johannesburg the team will fly to Cape Town for briefing meetings
with Frank Khan, director of public prosecutions for Western Cape
province, South African sports minister Balfour and British High
Commissioner Ann Grant.
