Dola Banerjee qualifies for Olympics
KOLKATA, SEPT. 17. India's top woman archer Dola Banerjee
qualified for the next Olympic Games by finishing 34th out 48
direct berths available from the 41st World outdoor target
archery championship being held at Beijing, according to
information reaching here.
The brief report from the manager of the Indian team, Mr. Paresh
Mukherjee, informed that the women's competition reached the
Olympic round where 64 qualifiers would contest in a straight one
to one knockout basis. Last two years National champion Dola, who
shot in excess of 1300 points in the trials at the Sports
Authority of India, Eastern Centre, late last month, scored 1291
points to end 34th.
Chekrovolu Swuro, the second best archer, logged 1280 points to
end 51st to stay in fray. The other two, Jhanu Hansdah and
debutante Bansaralin Dhar collected 1253 and 1227 points to
finish 65th and 78th respectively to go out of the individual
event.
The women's team finished 15th out of 16 qualifiers for the team
honours by accumulating 3824 points. The Indian team would take
on the second placed team for a place in the quarterfinals. The
three best individual scores that of Dola, Chekrovolu and Jhanu,
were added to make the team total.
The men's team of Lalrem Sanga Changte, Kailash Singh, Satyadev
Prasad and Acharya Ved Kumar would be seen in action on the
morrow.
