Bengal, Tripura qualify for quarterfinals

MAPUSA, SEPT. 19. Bengal and Tripura qualified, from Group D and C respectively, for the quarterfinals of the National under-19 girls football championship being played in Goa.

Bengal defeated Kerala 9-0 while Tripura ousted Maharashtra 1-0. Mizoram, also in Group D, kept its hopes alive for a berth in the quarterfinal with a facile 4-1 victory over Orissa.

In a one-sided encounter at Vasco-Da-Gama, Bengal's Shilpi Deb stole the limelight with five goals - four in the first half and one in the second half. Nosaba Alam scored two goals in the 46th and 65th minutes while Madhumita Das and Ruma Ghosh netted a goal each.

In the match between Tripura and Maharashtra held at Duler ground in Mapusa, Tripura overcame a stiff challenge from Maharashtra before registering a solitary goal victory. The all- important goal came in the fourth minute of the second half through Gulti Choudhary.

In the third match of the day, between Mizoram and Orissa, also played at Vasco-Da-Gama, Srosiamkimi, Sanjkhumi and Lallawmaumi (2) netted for the former while Rojalin Jana reduced the margin for Orissa.
