Sanctions may go soon

WASHINGTON, SEPT. 20. In the wake of the situation triggered by terrorist strikes in New York and Washington, the United States today indicated that a decision on the sanctions imposed on India and Pakistan have to be taken soon for a ``very real and immediate'' reason.

Answering a question about sanctions imposed against the two countries following their nuclear tests in 1998, the U.S. Defence Secretary, Mr. Donald Rumsfeld told reporters at the Pentagon that ``clearly, a judgment will have to be made as we go along as to how long these restrictions seem to be appropriate''.

``As for myself, I am of the opinion that ..... we need to deal with those two countries for a very real and immediate reason'', he said.

Exactly what the State Department and the President decide with respect to other aspects of these relationships would have to be worked out, but ``I believe it is very appropriate for us to be talking to these two countries with respect to the current situation'', he said.
